The Ever Changing Interview Process…

The RW Visa interview process is a very trying time.  For the RW, it is seen as a test filled with anxiety.  For the WM, it is a cause of frustration.  Why is this?  The fiancé visa is a hybrid visa that sits between an immigrant and non-immigrant visa.  In other words it requires more scrutiny than for a tourist and yet not quite as stringent as someone immigrating to the States.  The American Embassies abroad are charged with screening foreigners for terrorists to undesirables.  They can’t outright deny a fiancé visa unless they have good cause, however they can make it very difficult if the paper work is less than perfect or they consider that you or she is near the fringes of eligibility.

For the WM the frustration is obvious in that once the interview starts, they are helpless to do anything to assist their RW.  Most WM are half a world away when the interview is taking place and have little recourse in getting last minute or previously forgotten information to them.  That is exactly the rub that causes much frustration in this situation.  The man is supposed to be a man of action and here he is forced to sit on his thumbs and wait it out.

For RW it is a particular trial because the interview appears to be an open-ended test.  With just the answers to a handful of questions, the Embassy will grant or deny the dreams of a RW.  This is a life changing event and nothing to be taken lightly.  Consequently, RW take it very seriously and along with that comes a great deal of anxiety.

RW are used to tests based on wrote memory in a well-defined areas of study.  Standardized testing is a hallmark of the Russian educational system.  This is something that RW can depend on.  It is to their advantage that the test that her GF’s just took will be the same as the one she is about to take.  There is a great deal of comfort in getting some inside scoop on how any given exam will be.

This idea of a test where the questions and answers are not evident and finite is something a bit unsettling to RW.  By the time the interview comes around, some are just fit to be tied simply because they have little to gauge their ability to pass such a test.  The truth is that about 99.9% of the interview questions are based on the information that is given to the Embassy by the WM.  If the WM is diligent in providing copies of all the documents and explaining them, then there is little to worry about unless the RW gets stage fright and clams up.

The other half of the story is that the Embassy procedures in administering the interview is always changing to throw off balance the would be terrorist or less than honest folk.  And in the process of saving our country from such dangers, there is no doubt that there are some honest RW road kill along the way.

It is not that the Embassy takes great delight in destroying something so wonderful (though it may seem so at times) it is just their job.  And as we WM and RW are able to find out and communicate more quickly how the procedures change, the Embassy will no doubt respond by changing their procedures more frequently.  The vicious circle is never ending and relentless.

So what is it like?  I’ve have never had the pleasure of a tax audit (perhaps I have never amassed a significant amount of bad karma), however I can imagine what it feels like.  It is something that you just have to bear and grin it out.  The walls came down years ago; however in doing so the Embassy’s walls had to go up 2 fold.  So those that are planning to go through this… buckle up… it’s going to be a bumpy ride.  Just remember that once you get through it all you will be that much closer to your dreams of a Rwife!
