Russian Women and Their First Car…
RW are raised on American shows like Santa Barbara. Shows that display the glitz and glamour of the rich American lifestyle often mislead RW. Some RW become enamored with such tales and believe in part that all AM live like this, or at least their RW wife should.
Then enters the WM that swept her off her feet and take her to a land where everyone drives. So obviously she will want a car too. But which one is for her? There are no Ladas or Volgas here in the States. Perhaps the only recognizable cars to her are Audis, BMWs and Benzs. All high ticket cars even for the average AM. As I have written in another topic, RW have no car culture to speak of. Therefore, fixing and maintaining things is man’s work. All that is required to keep her car going will of course be the man’s responsibility (Everything else for that matter).
OF course, RW must keep up with the Joneses. She maybe influenced by the cars that her RW GFs are driving or have talked about getting for a first car. It is very telling about her and her relationship with her husband as to what kind of car she asks for and gets. She maybe a diamond in the rough, but is she worth cutting her teeth on a high end car… for practicing her skills?
IMO, the best route for those that are in the position to buy their RWife a new car is to have a bit of restrain. The chances are very good that there will be a few fender benders along the way, if not worse. Fortunately, RW have a propensity to a have mostly minor parking accidents where no one gets bruised except their ego. To protect one’s interests and sanity, a slightly used, high reliability, mid-size sedan that is packed with all the optional safety features, would be ideal. Add a nav. system and she will be cruis’in without a worry. This way you should have ~4+years of reliable service from the car outside of the premiums and deductibles that you are most likely to shell out. At the same time you are protecting your RW from injury. The insistence on extra safety features and nav. system will earn you points in saying that you care for her.
The first car is often ther baseline of future cars. If you splurge an getting her an expensive car to begin with, she will expect the same or better the next time around. If you can handle it, go for the 4 door Mercedes and be self insured, otherwise something in the shade of affordable yet practical might be in order.
First cars I have seen for RW are (these are not ‘shared’ cars):
- Honda Civic
- Merc 320C
- Toyota Camry
- Corvette
- VW Passat V6
- Honda TL

I would recommend police cruisers as a first car. The ones with the extra big bumpers for pushing cars into or out of ditches would be best. Also short bed pickup trucks are another good option for a RW new to driving. If she hasn't smashed them up by the time she is gets her Green Card (about 2 years) then she could get something a bit more flashy.

Maxx,
Is this from experience or is it wishful thinking to have GCG locked in the back seat and being hauled to the gray-bar hotel.

Perhaps Ronin subconsciously and in my dreams I fantasize about a certain woman being arrested for violation of Public Law 99-639 (CFR Act of 11/10/86) and put into the back seat of that police cruiser. The rest of the fantasy includes being dropped out the back of the cargo hold of a C5 transport @ 5000 feet over Moscow wearing nothing but a parachute.
My point on the vehicles is to get something that can survive a crash well.

Maxx,
I understood your original post well, however I just couldn't pass up mentioning the parallel thought.
Yes, safety first is one of my top criteria for selecting a RW practice vehicle. That is why I taught my wife to drive in a $60K vehicle at night. Many of her GFs think it is crazy of me to do that, however she (my wife) has made no fouls or errors while others have. Sometimes being crazy works.

I remember Bean's wife totaling 3 new rather expensive Buicks. I remember my friend Howard telling about his wife making lane changes on the Freeway without looking. Another story about a RW they knew in a fatal accident. Then there was mine who had to use the entire incoming lane to make a turn. When told at the license burough that she must wait 3 months after she got her learner's permit to take the driving test she said "This stupid country!!! Why must I wait?!"
My guess would be that if you could measure the arrogance level of a RW you would find that it is in direct proportion to the amount of accidents they have. Rather like teenage boys with their hot cars only with teenage boys they fear smashing them up.

My wife is driving a 1989 Mercedes 190 that cost me £500 (about $1000) I saw no sense in letting her loose in anything more expensive just yet.
Naturally she had visions of a Lexus 4WD and a vision it remained!
She does play in my Chrysler 300C but only on quiet roads when I am with her.
